The candidates tournament in London

Candidates tournament: Kramnik shares first after a brilliant performance and unlucky finish.

The FIDE World Chess Championship Candidates took place in London 15th March to 1st April 2013. 14 Rounds 8 players in a double round robin.

This was the strongest and most important tournament since the World Chess Championship tournament in Mexico City in 2007.

Participants: Vladimir Kramnik, Levon Aronian, Magnus Carlsen, Boris Gelfand, Teimour Radjabov, Vassily Ivanchuk, Alexander Grischuk and Peter Svidler.

At the end of the first leg, Kramnik had a modest score, with all his games drawn. However, the second leg was completely different, as he started with a powerful 4.5/5 with outstanding wins against Svidler, Grischuk, Radjabov and Aronian, coming very close to a win against Carlsen as well.

With only two rounds to go, Kramnik was leading with half a point ahead of his only competitor by then, Magnus Carlsen. In round 13th, he could have settled the tournament in his favour when he had a large advantage against Gelfand but allowed him to scape with a draw in time trouble.

The end of event was dramatic. Carlsen lost in the last round but Kramnik also lost a few minutes later, after risking too much against Ivanchuk.

Kramnik showed the best chesss but Carlsen goes on to challenge Anand due to a better tiebreak based on number of wins.

At the official site of the event you can find more details about this outstanding tournament.
